We always receive a lot of questions at this time of the year in regards to garden preparation for the winter. It's the time of the year in the northern hemisphere when the leaves are falling and we are mentally, emotionally and physically preparing for the winter. As the plants & our gardens are going inwards or into hibernation for the winter, so are we. We've created a list of helpful tips and things you can do to prepare your garden for the winter. There are other ways to do it than this, it's a dance. Absorb what resonates and leave the rest.
1) Cover any baby plants with organic matter like mulch. This ensures the plants are well insulated if they haven't rooted well yet.
2) Rake & pile your leaves on the gardens. We love to leave the fallen leaves on our garden beds. This mimics how a forest builds soil & feeds the ecosystem.
3) Leave all the perennials that have died back standing. This adds lovely texture and beauty in the winter time. Seed heads also provide food for birds and other creatures during the cold months.
4) We can still plant our spring bulbs until closer to winter time. Feel free to add these in where ever.
5) Coniferous or evergreen trees & shrubs need to be well watered right before the frost. Hydration is key.
6) Fall is the best time for sheet mulching and prepping your garden beds for next spring.
We take a more organic approach to how to manage and grow with our gardens. This is reflective of how we prep for the winter months. The natural cycles of nature have proven to be our greatest teacher. We hope this helps & if you have any other questions please reach out to us via email.
